Every year, Apple organizes events where major announcements are made; from iOS updates to new devices etc. This year’s episode is pretty important for two major reasons;
- The iPhone SE
- The Timing.
The iPhone SE
Apple has been seen to move up from 4″ phones to 5″ and above recently but that does not mean they have completely stopped development of smaller sized phones. This year, they plan to annmounce the iPhone SE, a hybrid of the iPhone 6 series in the bodily dimensions of an iPhone 5. A few things have been confirmed and many more are just speculations. According to some trusted sources, the following are confirmed:
- It will be a 4″ phone.
- An A9 processor which is the same as the one in the iPhone 6 – Bloomberg
- An 8MP back camera and a 1.2MP front facing camera – 9to5Mac
- Touch ID and NFC, so Apple pay is giong to be possible.
- The absence of 3D touch. Now this is what everyone believes to be missing but nothing can be confirmed until the 21st.
- Pricing is aslo another part that has not been confirmed. According to 9to5Mac, it might be in the range of $400 – $500; but this is just their personal opinion and nothing official
THE TIMING
I believe it is no coincidence that Apple set this year’s conference on the 21st of March, when it fights the Government in court on the 22nd of March. Apple is a company that pays attention to precision and planning (which multi-billion dollar company doesn’t?); and I believe Tim Cook is going to use this opportunity to gather the support of the general public regarding Apple’s current trifle with the FBI concerning encryption, back-doors and whatnot. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, read my post on the draft-bill regarding tech companies and encryption.
This law suit is such a huge deal, not on it’s own but because of the aforementioned bill looming in the horizon. I will not go into details here as I have done so in my post on the bill itself. If Apple loses this battle, we may very well say we’ve lost the war of net neutrality; on the other hand, if Apple wins this battle, no, we cannot say we have won the war but it is a victory we can take solace in for the Winter to come, because I am damn well sure that the U.S goverrnment will not sit idly by while some tech company drags them though the mud.
I’ll go into details regarding what to expect in this event in subsequent posts; but for now, just be ready for a very long speech by Tim Cook on the 21st.
