Many mobile manufacturers have implemented an always-on screen and dubbed it different names; glance screen etc. Now LG is implementing this in the G5 with the somewhat witty tagline “Never go asleep while others do”. One thing common with all these “always-on” screens are the the materials used for these screens. They have always been OLED; which would make sense since only a portion of the screen lights up when needed to conserve power.
LG apparently wants to do something different. There have been speculations that they do not intend to use an OLED screen. Which leaves them two options:
- Get an insanely large battery..which by the way would increase the weight and bulkiness of the phone. Or
- Whip up some super cool tech that is more energy efficient than OLED (not an easy feat, I might add).
In my opinion, the best thing to do is just stick to traditional OLED but apparently Android Authority claims to have heard that LG said they would not be using OLED for the G-5.
This is kinda ironic considering the fact that LG has a division called LG Display that is building an OLED plant worth $8.71 billion – Source: The Verge.
LG has tested this always on thingy on the V10 last year:
See the topmost corner? Yeah, it was rumored to be a second display kinda. Which in essence it actually is. The LG-G5 is set to be announced on the 21st of February 2016.
